What Style of Yoga is It? Physically most modern Yoga postures (or Asanas) that work with the breath are based on the same historical book the Hatha Pradapika but teachers explore these poses in different ways according to their own style. I use the teachings of Ashtanga and Viniyoga to work on synchronising the breath with movement to help free the body by both working on dynamic stretches and developing muscular strength and awareness. The class will move quickly but nearly every pose that we do can be adapted to your body and current abilities. About Classical Yoga There are eight aspects to Yoga practice, of which Asana, or the postures and stretches of Yoga, is one. The postures might help with physical health, so that we can get the rest of the good things Yoga has to offer. The other practices of Yoga include: - Yama - which brings us to explore behaviour that is free mental habits and hooks
- Niyama - which explores states of mind, again helping us notice the habits and hooks of conditioning
- Pranayma - being conscious of how our breathing affects how we think and feel
- Pratyahara - being fully conscious of experience, really experiencing instead of chasing the mind's fantasies
- Dharana - contemplation and concentration, teaching the mind to keep steady on one thing and really look at it
- Dhyana - still-mind meditation, giving the mind some discipline and seeing how it works
- Samadhi - practising a state of transformed awareness
Practising Yoga in this whole way changes the possibilities of our life. We become more constructive in daily life, more contented, and much more resilient to the ups and downs of life. And just possibly you will step out of your constricted idea of yourself into a vastness that is nothing other than reality itself - a direct experience of Self and Reality.
